Confidence, connection and new skills at Beechworth.

The Blind Golf Come and Try Day held at Beechworth Golf Club was a wonderful success, bringing together people who are blind or have low vision, volunteer blind golf caddies, club members and the wider community in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Throughout the day participants had the opportunity to learn how to putt, swing and drive, with support from experienced blind golfers, volunteer caddies and club members. The relaxed and social atmosphere helped participants build confidence while trying new skills and connecting with others.

Feedback from participants and volunteers was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting how supportive and inclusive the day felt. One participant shared that they enjoyed “meeting new people and learning about golf,” while another said the day was “very welcoming and well organised.”

A volunteer caddy reflected that their favourite part of the day was “seeing them smile when they hit the ball.” Many participants reported feeling more confident to continue playing golf after the event, with several expressing interest in playing regularly at Beechworth Golf Club or other local clubs.

A very special thank you goes to James Atkin for facilitating the day, explaining the game of blind golf, providing demonstrations and supporting participants throughout the event. His knowledge, encouragement and lived experience played a significant role in making the day both enjoyable and inspiring for everyone involved.

Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria would also like to sincerely thank Beechworth Golf Club for their incredible support, generosity and hospitality in hosting the event and helping create such an inclusive and welcoming environment.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank the Victorian State Government for their funding support, which helped make this event possible and supported greater opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision to participate in sport and recreation.
