Cancer Screening - We joined in and asked all the questions!

What are the important things we all need to know?

When should I get tested for Breast, Cervical or Bowel cancer?
What does a Mammogram feel like?
How far into the vagina do I insert the Cervical Test Swab?
How do I use the home test-kit for Bowel Cancer, and most importantly, how do I avoid contaminating my stool sample when I am blind?

These questions are not your average topics of conversation.

Thanks to Cancer Council Victoria’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Alana Sadeghi, and Breast Screen Victoria’s Diversity & Inclusion Specialist, Liezle Oliver, for providing valuable information via two information sessions to women with vision loss.

The first session took place in-person at Cancer Council Victoria’s East Melbourne office on Thursday the 29th of August. Here, participants benefited from having a tactile exploration of test kits, being manually shown how to perform a swab, asking ANY question no matter how taboo, and taking home large-font information brochures and a bright pink breast screening tote bag.

The second session took place on Monday the 2nd of September via Zoom, for women who live in regional Victoria or those who preferred to obtain information from the comfort of their own home.

One participant voiced, “I was given a bowel screening test two years ago by my doctor. I didn’t know how to use it so I just put it in a drawer and ignored it. After today’s session, I feel so much more confident, I’m going to go home and do it right away!”

Thank you to the Alfred Felton Bequest for all their support.
