Congratulations to Maurice Gleeson OAM – recipient of the 2025 Blind Australian of the Year Award!
Maurice Gleeson OAM has dedicated over 30 years to transforming the lives of Victorians who are blind or vision impaired through his leadership of Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria. Mostly in a voluntary capacity, Maurice has created more than 30 inclusive programs—spanning tennis, AFL, soccer, swimming, and more—impacting over 25,000 people across the state.
Legally blind since childhood, Maurice has turned personal challenge into community empowerment. From pioneering Australia’s first blind soccer league to launching Blind AFL and building international pathways for blind tennis players, his innovation and advocacy have reshaped inclusion in sport.
A mentor, trailblazer, and true leader, Maurice Gleeson’s lifelong commitment continues to break down barriers and inspire generations.
