About our wonderful Wangaratta Peer Support Group:

The Wangaratta Vision Loss Peer Support Group has continued to grow in 2025, with our membership now at seven regular members. Throughout the year, our group has built strong connections, creating a warm, supportive environment where members feel comfortable to share, listen, and encourage one another. We were also delighted to appear in both the Hello Winter and Hello Summer booklets produced by the Rural City of Wangaratta, which helped raise awareness of our group and supported continued membership growth. One of our group members, Bob, was also recently featured as the local face of International Day of People with Disability, with an article sharing his life journey and highlighting his experiences with recent vision loss.

Our Wangaratta Peer Support Group offers a relaxed and welcoming space for people who are blind or have low vision to come together. Each month, we gather for a friendly coffee and cake catch up, where conversations flow easily as we share stories, experiences, challenges, and plenty of laughs. We meet at Where is My Coffee, a warm and inclusive social enterprise café serving up delicious coffee and life-changing opportunities for people with disability. We are incredibly grateful to the team at Where is My Coffee for always being helpful, flexible, and supportive in hosting our monthly catch ups.

The group is shaped by its members—we explore what supports us, the activities we’d like to try, and how we can continue building a strong, caring community. New members are always welcome.

In December, our group was joined online by Sara, a psychologist from Guide Dogs Victoria, who spoke with us about ways to support mental health, including strategies around coping with and accepting vision loss. Guide Dogs Victoria also generously supported our December gathering by covering the room hire at the Wangaratta Library and providing a delicious catered lunch for our members. A heartfelt thank you to Sara and Maureen for your support in planning this session, and to Guide Dogs Victoria for making the day possible.
