TANDEM CYCLINGTandem cycling allows vision impaired people to ride a bike at full speed without having to worry about where they are going. It's a great way to stay fit and feel the wind through your hair. A sighted person rides at the front and operates the steering and brakes and the vision impaired person shares the peddling load. People interested in cycling can come to one of our cycling days (we have one every 3 months or so). It is also possible to hire tandem bikes from some specialist cyclist shops for low cost. We have some people willing to ride as front riders if anyone needs a partner. The 2nd Tandem cycling day for 2006 was very successful. We had 20 rear
riders, 12 front riders, 10 tandem bikes and one 7 seater bike. The 7
seater was the fun part of the day but there was plenty of serious cycling
on tandems. The 7 seater had seats that all faced each other but when
we peddled we somehow managed to go forwards (or backwards depending n
where you were sitting). We introduced a BBQ lunch which helped the socialising
and allowed a few tall tales to be told. Our next tandem day at Kooyong will be Wednesday September 13. Any queries to nick.jones@vision.australia.org.au |
