RVIB SKI CLUB

About R.V.I.B Ski Club

The R V I B Ski Club was formed in 1968 after a number of vision impaired people had learned to ski with the RVIB Rehabilitation Centre.

In 1977 after many day trips to Mt Baw Baw and week-ends staying at
Du Nord Ski Club the Management of RVIB granted assistance to the Club to purchase a lodge at Mt Baw Baw. The RVIB Ski Club lodge is a 3 storey
A-frame building with a total of 20 beds and is warm and comfortable.

How does a blind person ski ?

For a blind person to ski safely, she/he should be accompanied on the
slopes by a sighted person who acts as guide. Although some blind people prefer to ski while following their guide, others prefer to ski in front of their guide. This allows the guide to see what the blind skier is doing as well as what is ahead. There is usually no physical contact between a blind skier and their guide, but continuous talking gives assurance as well as instilling confidence in each other. Good skiers do not necessarily make good guides; however, being good to ski with and having the ability to instil confidence and enjoyment is vital. The club does at times seek new members however
sighted members must be nominated by a blind member. Members are expected to assist with transport and make themselves available as guides for blind skiers.

How to get to the RVIB Ski Lodge

Take the Monash Freeway, turn off at Dandenong to Warragul/Drouin
and continue on Princess Highway approximately 55km. Take turn-off to
Drouin and Mt Baw Baw. Follow the C326 signs. Turn left and the road goes back on itself for about 500m. Turn right by Hotel/Motel. Continue to Neerim South, Noojee and Mt Baw Baw. The road is now sealed all the way. At
Neerim South there is a Hot Bread Bakery and further on a cheese factory, winery and trout farm.

The R V I B Ski Lodge is diagonally opposite Mt. Baw Baw Ski Hire. There
is a small A frame building close to the road and the Lodge is a short walk
down the hill.

Mount Baw Baw

Mt Baw Baw alpine resort is on the edge of the Baw Baw Plateau. It is the closest alpine resort to Melbourne and is the southern most resort in Victoria.

The alpine area surrounding Mt Baw Baw is an extremely attractive area for walking and hiking during the non-skiing seasons. The wild flowers in January are quite spectacular and there is also a wide variety of birds and animals including wombats in and around the village. You are surrounded by alpine scenery and views stretching over the LaTrobe Valley to Westernport Bay
and Bass Strait.

In winter the resort offers the downhill skier and snow boarder a variety of realistically priced skiing with uncrowded slopes and short lift queues and
home trails that allow easy return to the village It's ski slopes range from gentle runs, ideal for beginners, through to the challenging advanced trails that wind in and out of snow gums that dot the mountainside. There are 10 km of sheltered, well marked groomed trails to suit every level of cross country skier. For the experienced skier there is access to the Baw Baw Plateau and you can ski to Mt St Phillack, Mt St Gwinear and the Alpine Walking Track. For the not so energetic and the children you can throw a snowball, make a snowman, ride a toboggan on the toboggan runs for just go for a walk Car parks are within easy walking distance to the village and ski slopes.
