WALKING WITH WILLPOWER

Walking With Willpower

The Walking With Willpower project promotes fitness, wellbeing and community involvement by matching adults who have low or no vision with a friendly volunteer to share together the benefits of walking.

Project Coordinator Janene Sadhu will be happy to provide further information about the Walking With Willpower project by phone on (03) 9822 8876 or on 1800 331 000 if calling from outside Melbourne. Or email Janene at walkingwithwillpower@blindsports.org.au

Our Target Groups

It is envisaged that the project will benefit all members of the community.
The initial stages of the project will be targeted towards providing volunteers for people over 50 who have suffered a recent vision loss or have long term low or no vision and who want to regain a level of fitness.

Eligibility

Participants - adults with vision loss who are ambulant, live in the Melbourne Metropolitan area and are willing to provide feedback about the project.

Volunteers - must be at least 18 years of age, possess a positive attitude towards people with disabilities, be willing to undertake a short training program and provide feedback about the project.

Everyone connected with Walking With Willpower is aiming to make the project a fun positive experience for all participants and volunteers. Janene would love to hear from you if you would like to join us and Walk With Willpower.

Background information

All Australian Governments have express the need for people to become more
active as part of the desire to reduce long-term health costs. As a
consequence of having a vision impairment, opportunities for physical activity are fewer than in the general community. The Walking With Willpower project is recognised as a good starting point to promote fitness, improved health and overall wellbeing.

Benefits of the project:

It is anticipated that introducing people to a sporting pursuit at the walking entry level would allow people with low or no vision to further develop interests and capabilities to become involved in other activities through BSV, local
councils or neighborhood centres.
